Peer-to-peer (P2P) computing model has become an appealing alternative for building large-scale applications in distributed settings. Unlike traditional client-server model, P2P systems provide scalable, fault-tolerant and self-organizing operational environment. They offer benefits for information dissemination and sharing, efficient collaboration, real-time communication, and load-balancing in distributed platforms. However, designing scalable P2P algorithms, software tools and applications is not straightforward and remains an active area of research. In this talk, we describe some of our projects applying principles of P2P computing model for a group of research areas within distributed systems. They consist of (1) P2P Techniques for Multicast Reliability and Scalability, (2) Algorithms for P2P Epidemic Information Dissemination, (3) P2P Multipoint (MP) Videoconferencing Application. The areas that we are interested in are novel in the sense they adopt P2P techniques for better performance, reliability, and scalability.
