Reinventing Programming Education in the Web 2.0 era
Abstract:
India is short of competent programmers. The current,
'bible'-book method of teaching programming must make way
for an approach driven by concepts and applications. Today,
there is an exciting opportunity to teach programming so
that it not only emphasizes the principles of
computing, but it also lets students easily build highly
interactive web-driven applications based on those
principles. This talk is about Janastu/IIITM-K, India's Principles of
Programming course where students learn foundational
concepts and then consciously apply them to build Web 2.0
applications.
Speaker Bio
Dinesh is the technical director of a non profit organization
that develops open source software and provides IT
support for various issue based work. Dinesh is also
an associate at IIITM-K, Kerala, India where he works
with Prof. Venkatesh Choppella on developing techniques
to teach computer science that is relevant for today's need.
One of the objectives of the course is that it should be
enable learning on a large scale and that the material
should be accessible for all.
